NZRA is among a select group of organisations chosen by DoC to assist in the selection of a new Great Walk. Our analysis of the short-listed options has focused on the following criteria:

- Proximity to population centres.

- Proximity to low-participation groups.

- The utility for Outdoor Education. (Great Walks are free of charge for New Zealand children)

Based on those criteria and consultation with NZRA members, we recommended the Te Paki Track in Northland and the Aotea Track on Great Barrier Island.

Collectively, the consulted organisations recommended The Te Paki track and one other of the seven options to advance. DoC finally selected the Te Paki Track, the Queen Charlotte Track and The Hump Ridge Track to advance to detailed consideration. We remain hopeful the Te Paki Track will emerge as the final result for a new Great Walk.
