Marketing and Communications Manager (Permanent 32 - 40 hours per week)

As the Recreation Aotearoa Marketing and Communications Manager, you will lead the design and delivery of strategic and tactical marketing and communications activity to raise our profile, strengthen member engagement, and increase the uptake of programmes and services.
You will own and drive Recreation Aotearoa’s marketing and communications strategy, ensuring we are a strong, trusted, and influential voice for the recreation sector. This is a varied role combining strategic leadership with hands-on delivery, working closely with the Chief Executive, Senior Leadership Team, programme managers, and external partners.
You will also lead and mentor one direct report (Marketing and Communications Coordinator) and champion best practices across brand, digital, media, advocacy, and member communications.
Key responsibilities include:
- Shaping and delivering Recreation Aotearoa’s strategic marketing and communications plan aligned with Te Whai Oranga
- Providing strategic marketing and communications advice to the Chief Executive, Senior Leadership Team, and staff
- Developing and delivering integrated marketing campaigns for programmes, events, conferences, and sector initiatives
- Ensuring Te Ao Māori voices, narratives, and perspectives are authentically woven throughout storytelling and communications
- Leading organisational communications across owned channels, including e-Pānui, website, and social media
- Managing media relations, including drafting media releases and identifying proactive opportunities
- Supporting advocacy priorities through clear, impactful communications
- Championing and protecting the Recreation Aotearoa brand, tone of voice, and visual identity
- Leading website content planning, optimisation, and performance monitoring
- Using insights and analytics to inform decision-making and continuous improvement
- Supporting membership growth and engagement through targeted campaigns and communications
About you
You are an experienced marketing and communications professional who combines strategic thinking with strong delivery. You are confident advising senior stakeholders, comfortable leading integrated campaigns, and skilled at translating complex information into clear, compelling stories.
You bring:
- Strong experience in marketing, communications, and brand management
- Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills
- Experience leading digital and owned-channel campaigns
- Confidence managing websites, social media, and analytics
- An understanding of media relations and public-facing communications
- A commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and a willingness to grow cultural capability
- A collaborative, solutions-focused approach and a good sense of humour
Experience in the not-for-profit, membership, or public sector is desirable.
