Are you passionate about safety and the outdoors?

We’re looking for a dynamic Training Officer / Tertiary Instructor Support team member to collaborate with our Safety Manager and help elevate our staff training programs to new heights!

About Us

At Hillary Outdoors, we celebrate the vision of our founder, Sir Graeme Dingle, and our first patron, Sir Edmund Hillary, who understood the incredible impact of merging outdoor experiences with education. We cultivate a bold and supportive culture that encourages exploration and adventure, inviting you to bring your grit, determination, and passion.

Our mission is to empower individuals through unforgettable outdoor experiences. Our transformative expeditions for schools and groups foster confidence, resilience, and a deep connection to the environment. Here, success is about channelling your energy into memorable adventures, making this an exciting and rewarding opportunity you won't want to miss!

About the Role

In this role, you'll work closely with the Safety Manager to deliver essential staff training and monitor program delivery, assisting instructors in planning and critiquing their client programs. You will ensure that training meets organisational needs and oversee the Competency System. Your responsibilities also include providing high-quality instruction for the Tertiary Programme, focusing on Certificate L4 and Diploma L5 courses, particularly in kayak instruction and environmental issues.

Safety is a top priority; you’ll need to comply with the HOEC Safety Management System, report incidents and hazards, and model safety protocols. You will monitor safe practices in the field and ensure your training aligns with safety standards. Additionally, you'll assist in forecasting staffing needs, support the induction of new instructors, and help develop staff professional pathways. Unique responsibilities may be assigned based on your skills.

Key Qualifications and Skills

Candidates should hold relevant qualifications, including NZOIA certifications (Bush 1, Rock 1, Kayak Leader) or equivalent, as well as tertiary qualifications in Outdoor Education or a related field. Familiarity with safety management systems and protocols, as well as proven experience in planning, delivering, and evaluating outdoor education programs is important. Senior level instructional skills, particularly in kayak instruction are preferred. Experience in mentoring other instructors and providing constructive feedback is highly valued, as is effective verbal and written communication for collaboration with team members and external partners.

Why Work With Us?

Joining Hillary Outdoors Education Centre means becoming part of a passionate community dedicated to fostering personal growth and environmental stewardship through outdoor education. Here, you'll have the opportunity to work in stunning natural settings, delivering transformative experiences that empower individuals and groups. We prioritise safety and professional development, offering ongoing training and support to help you advance your skills and qualifications.

At Hillary Outdoors our inclusive and collaborative culture encourages innovation and continuous improvement, making it a rewarding place to grow your career while making a meaningful impact. If you’re ready to embrace adventure and promote guardianship of the environment, Hillary Outdoors is the perfect place for you!

Please note you must be eligible to work in New Zealand to be considered for this role.
